Geographies of the Unknown

Blue-Green algae Spirulina
Speculative project with spirulina bioplastic  focusing on electrical current from algae during photosynthesis. Algae as a way to produce energy.
Observing the chemical components and properties of elements in nature and then re-imagining new functions for this elements. Using the principle of "sculpture" to shape reality using chemical components and elements as the main "material" to create new realities. The outcome will be a transformed reality. Exploring the material dimension with the principles of sculpture to interact with reality.
Geographies of the Unknown matter, explored through sculpture process in an attempt to expand the vision from micro reality to a cosmic realm.

"Biomatter becomes Bioenergy"

From the Series New Systems "Geographies of the Unknown"

Experimenting with the making of  bioplastic and biomaterials made with spirulina, a microscopic and filamentous cyanobacterium used since the Aztec Civilization. "Geographies of the Unknown " proposes experimentation with chemical components found in nature to explore the diversity of new materials, which can be studied in its chemical components, it's material possibilities for artistic research, the characteristics of it's decomposition on the realm of fungi.
Observing the characteristics of this bioplastic within a deep philosophical and expanded vision that goes from the microscopic aspect towards a cosmic dimension.
Experiments with chemical components as a way to interact with reality through the possibilities offered by materials.

Components of the Agar and spirulina bioplastic:

Spirulina Molecular Formula: C33H38N4O6, Agar Molecular Formula: C14H24O9, Glycerol Molecular Formula: C3H8O, Water Molecular Formula : H2O .

This project explores spirulina bioplastic as fermented matter after a couple of days of being created. The surface offers a geographical sense. That allows us to imagine and see other dimensions. In this case the realm of the fermented surface of bioplastic. To juxtapose two different images that belong to diverse scales and immagini new realms, specially one that goes from the micro scale to the cosmic one. The action of juxtaposing scales is an exercise to unlock deep thinking about our reality, and to meditate about how the human mind always is searching for knowledge.

Experimenting with the use ephemeral sculptures made with spirulina bioplastic using the notion of "Geographies" to address the materiality of the sculpture. Documenting the decay of the ephemeral sculptures as a way of mapping the process of matter through time. An exercise of the spirit, in an attempt to "map time"
