Energy Systems
To support the awareness towards a change in fuel systems that improve and impact the world positively, we are introducing ENERGY SYSTEMS, an ongoing research thinking platform that provides a space for exploration and exchange of information on the topic of the Microbial Fuel Cell System. Energy Systems is an ongoing and developing collaboration between Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos and interdisciplinary artist Audrey Rangel Aguirre towards the production of new and sustainable energy systems elaborated from the artistic, philosophical and scientific perspective.
Witnessing a transition from the current systems that use a dead source of fossil energy to power contemporary societies, towards a shift in the production of energy which comes from a living source: the metabolic processes of microorganisms, benefiting the environment by creating an alternative way to produce energy. MFC has the potential to produce bio energy as well as cleaning the polluted ecosystems damaged by human and industrial exploitation of the environment, using the metabolic processes of microorganisms to create energy instead of using fossil fuels to power the energetical needs of society.
ENERGY SYSTEMS events:
1. “Soil Stations” a conceptual exploration of the Microbial Fuel Cell System as a model for the creation of giant Microbial Fuel Cell Sculptures of soil to function in relation with the human body. Part of the collaboration with engineer Ioannis Ieropoulos presented at The Taboo Transgression Transcendence in Art & Science 2025 Conference in Ljubljana.
Was held on Wednesday 10th September 2025 at Katedrala Kino Šiška Session 1A: “Karst”. Chaired by Andrew Gryf Paterson
2. “The Language of Sentient Soil, The Microbial Fuel Cell System of Soil as a Philosophical Framework for Reciprocity” is a collaboration between Professor Ioannis Ieropoulos, Interdisciplinary Artist Audrey Rangel Aguirre and Artist Jose Lopez\ HC-(M)
Premiered on Friday 26th September 2025 at the OSMOSIS immersive event organised by All FAD Milan, during Milan Fashion Week, 26-28 September 2025, at the “Leonardo da Vinci” National Museum of Science and Technology. Curated by Valentina Gioia Levy and Elena Giulia Abbiatici.
3. Energy Systems Revisiting Axis Interactive Installation, Envisioning Artistic Processes as Methodology, Towards the Production of New Power and Fuel Systems. Part of the OSMOSIS event.
4. Geological Vessels are intuitive, speculative-sculptural instruments that use gravity as the force to connect planetary scales with the human scale through a soil flow powered by gravity. Part of The Language of Sentient Soil.
